Introduction: iBienvenidos a la clase de español! Welcome to Spanish class. My name is Leif Hanson. I earned a BA in Spanish (Magna Cum Laude) from Cal State San Marcos and I received my Teaching Credential from Chapman University. I have been a Spanish teacher in the LUSD since 1999 and this is my seventh year at Cabrillo High. I have taught all levels of Spanish including AP 4 and 5. As with prior levels, we will be focusing on listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish. We will also study the culture of various Spanish speaking countries through music, videos, literature, and cultural activities that celebrate traditions from these countries.
Course Objectives/Key learning Outcomes: Promote/improve Spanish proficiency while supporting the standards for foreign language. The four language modalities (speaking, reading, writing and listening) will be practiced every class and an emphasis will be placed on effective oral communication. Foreign language standards to be covered: 1 Communication, 2 Cultures, 3 Connections, 4 Comparisons, and 5 Communities.
Materials: Textbook/workbooks: Avancemos 2/3; Lecturas para todos; El cuaderno. In addition, one composition notebook (100 sheets; 9 ¾ X 7 ½ ). Students are to bring these daily along with a notebook, pen, pencil, etc. Students not coming to class prepared will lose participation points.
Organization/Structure of Class: Every class will be started with a warm-up activity. Warm-ups will be checked for completion and accuracy. Lessons for the day will be taught, using a variety of direct instruction, guided practice, individual practice and working in groups. Participation is both voluntary and non-voluntary. On occasion, videos in Spanish will be shown. All videos have a G or a PG rating and students will have an assignment to complete based on the video.
Grading/Progress Monitoring : Class grades will be based on the percentage of the total points possible during the semester. There are roughly 1000 (there could be more or less points) points during the semester. The percentages are as follows: Journal 50%, tests and quizzes 30% and participation 20%. A student must be present to participate. Tests/Quizzes: There will be a chapter test at the end of each chapter. We will also have vocabulary tests for each chapter. We will have a final at the end of each semester which will include everything covered previously. There will be several quizzes throughout the six week period. Some will be oral, some will be written, some will be scheduled, some will be unannounced (pop quiz). There are no make-up tests/quizzes. If a student misses a test, the next test will be worth double. If that test is missed, the student will receive a zero for both tests.
Homework Policy : Homework is an important part of the class. It reinforces everything that we learned in our daily lesson. It is the responsibility of the student to get any missing assignments due to absences. Most homework will be done in the journal, however, some homework
assignments will be turned in. If a student misses class, it is their responsibility to get make-up work. To that end, I request that students e-mail and ask for missing assignments. That way the student can be ready upon return. If a student knows that he or she will be absent for one or more days in advance, I require he or she to send me an e-mail with the homework request before the absence. The student will have one day upon his or her return to receive credit for missed work. I check all make-up work in my class at lunch. Homework can be turned in one day late for half credit. If a student has an unexcused absence, he or she will not be allowed to make up work.
Support/Intervention: I am available before school and during lunch for additional support and instruction. If my door is open, please do not hesitate to come in and express comments, questions, concerns or to seek help. If a student fails a test, he or she will be assigned mandatory tutoring (during lunch with me) or with one of the peer or district tutors after school in the library.
Classroom Norms:
Due Dates For Major Assignments/Projects: Aside from the mid-term and final examinations, the following dates are important to be observed regarding journal checks. Journals will be checked the weeks of 9/22, 11/3 and 12/15. Journal turned in late will be deducted 10%. There will be one project due during the 2nd semester.
